Risk Mitigation Research Programme Coordinator


Responsibilities

Management of the SAMAC Risk Mitigation Research Programme

  • Manage overall day to day research administration activities (contracts, payments, queries).
  • Initiate, coordinate, monitor and report on research projects in the Risk Mitigation Research Programme.
  • Risk Mitigation research strategy development, implementation, and communication.
  • Provide researchers and industry with support as needed.
  • Conduct surveys and perform specified field work as required.
  • Develop best practices for industry.
  • Management of demonstration field trials, Orchards of the Future projects etc.
  • Provide support in other areas as may be required on an ad-hoc basis.

Develop Integrated Pest Management protocols for the South African macadamia industry in collaboration with the relevant SAMAC Sub-Committee and R&D Committee.

  • Continuously re-evaluate scouting methods and economic thresholds and develop new methods and thresholds when required.
  • Facilitate trials to compare the efficacy and integrate chemical and biological control options.
  • Continuously identify and facilitate evaluation of possible biological control agents (predators, parasitiods, fungi etc) as possible biocontrol options.

Pest and Disease Risk Management

  • Manage implementation of SAMAC biosecurity and agrochemical risk frameworks for the macadamia industry (action plan for new incurrences, quarantine, agrochemicals).
  • Visit macadamia farms upon request of the SAMAC R&D Committee to conduct scouting with the aim to assist with early detection of pests and diseases when needed.
  • Lobby for new registrations, label extensions and changes in withholding periods on behalf of industry.

Other

  • Draft articles for SAMAC’s various communication mediums such as the quarterly
    newsletters, the SAMAC App and the Journal.
  • Assisting with the organising of research symposiums, especially with regards to
    technical and research items on the programme, session chairs, exhibitors.

Requirements and Key Competencies

  • MSc or PhD in Entomology or related field.
  • Sound understanding of the research process.
  • Good technical understanding of pests and diseases.
  • Experience in a related role will be advantageous.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities at once.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong administrative and planning skills.
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to work well within a team and independently.
  • Flexibility to travel.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Valid driver’s license.
